Hiking in the Harz
Hiking in the Harz: A paradise for nature and hiking enthusiasts
The Harz, Germany's northernmost low mountain range, is a true paradise for hiking enthusiasts. With its dense forests, mystical moors, clear mountain lakes and imposing peaks, the region offers countless hiking opportunities for all ages and fitness levels. If you plan a stay in one of our apartments at Casa da Enzo, an unforgettable hiking experience awaits you right outside your door.
The most beautiful hiking trails in the Harz
The Hexenstieg: The Harz Hexenstieg is one of the most famous long-distance hiking trails in Germany. It runs for around 100 kilometers from Osterode over the Brocken to Thale. On the way you will cross dense forests, idyllic valleys and historical sites. The highlight is certainly the climb to the Brocken, the highest mountain in the Harz.
The Harz Border Trail: Along the former inner-German border, this trail offers exciting insights into the history of Germany and breathtaking views of the Harz landscape. The border trail is around 75 kilometers long and leads from Tettenborn to Rhoden.
Bodetal Trail: The Bodetal, also known as the "Grand Canyon of the Harz", impresses with steep rock faces and wild rivers. The trail leads from Treseburg to Thale and offers spectacular views and an exciting hike along the Bode.
Around the Brocken: In addition to the Hexenstieg, there are numerous other trails that lead to the Brocken or circle it. A particularly beautiful route is the Goetheweg, which follows in the footsteps of the famous poet to the summit.
Wurmberg circular trail: The Wurmberg near Braunlage is the second highest mountain in the Harz and offers a less demanding but equally attractive alternative to the Brocken. The circular trail offers fantastic views and can easily be hiked in half a day.
Nature experiences and sights
In addition to the well-signposted hiking trails, the Harz offers numerous natural wonders and sights:
Harz National Park: It extends over an area of around 24,700 hectares and protects the unique flora and fauna of the low mountain range. Here you can observe rare animal species and hike on natural paths.
Harz Water Regale: This historic system of ponds, ditches and watercourses was created in the Middle Ages to supply the mines and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hikes along these waterways offer both scenic beauty and interesting insights into mining history.
Stalactite caves: The Harz is known for its impressive stalactite caves, such as the Baumannshöhle and the Hermannshöhle near Rübeland. A hike to these caves can be perfectly combined with an exciting guided tour underground.
Practical tips for your hike
Equipment: Good hiking boots are a must, as the paths are often rocky and uneven. Weatherproof clothing and a backpack with enough provisions and water are also part of the basic equipment.
Maps and apps: There are numerous hiking maps and apps that will help you find the best routes and not get lost.
Safety: Find out about the weather in advance and don't underestimate the effort, especially when touring the Brocken or other higher peaks. A hiking map and a fully charged cell phone are also recommended.
